New innovation helps deliver Augmented Reality to hospitals

30 April 2021

AND Technology Research’s Tento testing dashboard is being utilised to streamline the software testing of a new 3D imaging system that allows doctors to see holographic images of organs prior to surgery.

Tento is a purpose-built web-based tool that enables developers, project managers, and test engineers the ability to track, manage, and organise their product development and testing journey. The dashboard provides engineers with quick insight into the progress of their project as test scripts, anomalies, and the requirements traceability matrix are all accessible in one place. Thanks to end-to-end visibility across the software testing lifecycle, development teams can now easily map and visualise the relationship and test coverage of user requirements, software function, unit, and code.

As the world scrambles to respond to new challenges brought on by Covid-19, Tento serves as an example of how agile software management can bring the medical world into the future. Increased agility removes multiple layers of obstruction to the product development process and can therefore speed up the creation new medical technologies.

In this case, Tento has been used successfully to accelerate the software testing of a ground-breaking 3D visualisation system developed by Norwegian start-up HoloCare. The HoloCare Studio provides clinicians with visualisation through 3D Holograms of a patient’s organs, giving better insights into both heart and liver diseases prior to life-saving surgery.

The 3D models are created from CT images and use state-of-the-art AI algorithms and Virtuality Reality headsets, and software to create 3D holograms. The hologram appears in the middle of any room with a headset and can be manipulated to view inside organs and different lesions/tumours. Clinicians can inspect and visualise organs of patients who have underlying conditions before going to surgery.

To make this possible, AND has been working with HoloCare, undertaking unit, function, and system testing to verify and validate that the new software matches with the user requirements. Tento was utilised to capture the test evidence and the requirements traceability matrix for the CE medical mark which will bring the product to market safely, all in just four months.

Commenting on the new implementation of Tento, CEO of ANDtr, Dr Nicola Thorn said: “There are a growing number of exciting innovations using Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Augmented Reality being developed for regulated markets such as MedTech. However, it is not always straightforward to match the agile development process to the regulation needed. This is where Tento plays a huge part in being able to provide efficient and speedy management of agile testing for regulation. We are hugely proud and honoured to provide a new test management tool which will streamline processes for HoloCare who are bringing these new technologies to surgeons, with potentially life-saving impact. We’re looking forward to working with HoloCare on future innovations!”

Also commenting on the implementation of Tento, CEO of HoloCare, Alison Sundset said: “We’re very pleased to be providing this new state-of-the-art technology to help surgeons with preplanning of complex surgical procedures and thus enhancing individual patient outcomes. Our team is honoured to work on this kind of product.

“Tento has been a real game-changer for us on this project. It makes the whole regulatory process so much more manageable and efficient. We look forward to seeing Tento’s usage throughout the MedTech industry – it is exactly what we need to speed up these processes. We’re looking forward to working with ANDtr on the next one!”
