Picking the best STEM YouTube partner: Top 5 engineering YouTube channels

24 February 2022

Since its creation in 2005, the popularity of YouTube has skyrocketed. Currently, global users watch 5bn YouTube videos per day, totalling over 1bn hours of content – that’s more than Netflix and Facebook combined. While other social media platforms rise and fall, there seems to be no end to the ever-increasing popularity of YouTube. Here, Hannah Sanders, Account Executive at Stone Junction, explains how STEM companies can choose the best YouTube channel to appear on.

YouTube influencers are creators who have amassed a high number of relevant subscribers and attract high engagement figures. They can be highly influential due to their authenticity – they aren’t glossy and unreachable like celebrities. Viewers often feel like they know the influencer – through regular videos, audience members become invested in them and their personal lives. So, a recommendation from a YouTuber feels trustworthy, like a recommendation from a friend.

But with around five million YouTube accounts with over 1000 subscribers, choosing the right influencer is an essential, but daunting, task. Don’t worry though, we are here to help, with our list of the top five channels for engineering companies to appear on.

Real Engineering

To establish a company as an expert in its field, Real Engineering is a great place to start. With 3.4 million subscribers, it produces explanatory videos on a range of topics from hydrogen fuel to metal 3D printing. The subscriber count is impressive, but only tells half the story, with videos consistently getting much higher viewing figures. For example, the recent video on the insane engineering of James Webb telescope has been viewed nearly six million times and has 143,000 likes.

Appearing on Real Engineering helps companies establish themselves as thought leaders in a more down-to-earth, engaging way while reaching a wider audience and boosting credibility.

Interesting Engineering
By posting videos frequently – around 15 videos per month – Interesting Engineering has developed a strong, active community. The channel features a mixture of information videos and product-focussed videos, which are potential sources of coverage for engineering firms looking to engage YouTube influencers. Interesting Engineering has positioned itself as knowledgeable within its field, so its subscribers are likely to trust any business featured on the channel.

Mark Rober

Former NASA and Apple Engineer Mark Rober produces videos on technology, such as robots and drones. For example, he recently covered a new robot that eats trash in a video that has been viewed over 25 million times and has 1.5 million likes. Mark’s videos introduce a non-expert audience to the world of interesting technology. The channel has a huge 21.1 million subscribers, so is a great way for an engineering business to widen its audience and reach new markets.

Engineering.com

A globally trusted source for professional engineering content, engineering.com is a website that provides engineers with access to the latest resources for career and interests, including live webinars, research reports, tools and software.

Its corresponding YouTube channel produces news style videos, often reporting on products. It provides an opportunity for engineering businesses to reach a strong community of people who are serious about engineering and advancing their company and career, potentially catching the eye of new customers.

Engineering News-Record

Many trade magazines also have YouTube channels. The audiences across the platforms will be similar, so companies can be sure they are targeting the right people. However, the audience will be wider as YouTube is not limited by cost or availability and videos are more widely shared than articles.

For engineers, Engineering-News Record is an ideal target. It produces videos related to the articles it publishes, but with the added bonus of visual demonstrations. With 45.9 thousand subscribers, it is one of the more popular engineering-focused magazine YouTube channels.

Including YouTuber influencer relations in PR campaigns is an effective way to reach wider audiences and grow brand awareness. With a wide variety of YouTube influencers within the engineering sector, businesses need to choose the option that best aligns with their values and goals.
