Over a third of facility maintenance professionals seek support for reactive maintenance tasks

14 November 2023

With a further 1 in 3 (32 percent) of facility managers said dealing with their maintenance budget was the most pressing issue, a vicious cycle of reactive maintenance tasks is the most important issue to tackle for maintenance professionals, a recent poll reveals.

A third of professionals (32 percent) cited that defending their maintenance budget was their highest priority, followed by meeting energy efficiency and net zero targets (21 percent), choosing the right technology (7 percent) and adapting to changing working patterns (6 percent).

SFG20, the industry standard for building maintenance, conducted a recent poll that gathered responses from 167 specialists during a webinar aimed at facility management professionals to help them save money on their maintenance budget.

Facility management professionals were also asked to explain what SFG20 is, with over half (52 percent) providing an incorrect answer.

Paul Bullard, Product Director at SFG20, said, “Reactive maintenance tasks drain resources, time, and budget, leaving us perpetually one step behind. Implementing proactive maintenance techniques is the key to getting the best value for money from a building maintenance programme while remaining legally compliant. Switching to a proactive maintenance approach, where you regularly maintain your assets, removes the temptation to only do the bare minimum to save costs, as this can lead to operationally-critical assets being undermaintained. That increases the risk of failure, drives up energy costs, and reduces their remaining useful life – it’s a vicious cycle.

"By using digital modelling tools, data-driven insights, and proactive planning, we can not only save costs but also ensure our facilities run more smoothly, forecasting when work needs to be carried out as opposed to firefighting.”
