Future of robotics and automation: Professor Dominik Boesl joins Farnell’s ‘Top Tech Voices’

25 February 2025

The latest from Farnell’s ‘Top Tech Voices’ interview series discusses ‘The Factory of the Future/Humans and Machines: A Collaborative Future’.

Farnell asks author, futurologist and techno-optimist Professor Dominik Boesl: What does a future of robotics and automation working alongside human beings actually look like?

Farnell President, Rebeca Obregon, said, “We are extremely privileged to have luminaries of Dominik’s calibre participate in our Top Tech Voices series. His insights into the future of robotics and how they will integrate with human workers is fascinating.”

Boesl started his career in 1999 at Siemens, moving in 2005 to Microsoft Germany, where he held various leadership positions, including national responsibility for developer evangelism. He leads the global ‘Robotic & AI Governance’ effort to establish a framework for voluntary self-regulation regarding the use of disruptive technologies. He has fostered interdisciplinary discussions about the impact of robotics and automation on society and humankind, and is an internationally-recognised expert in Ethics for Robotics and AI. He is also the acting ambassador for the global IEEE TechEthics initiative.

Hosted by award-winning AI Content and Prompt Engineering Strategist, Georgia Lewis Anderson, among the topics Boesl covers in the latest episode are:

• How humans and machines can collaborate more effectively on the factory floor
• The role of IIoT in driving sustainable manufacturing practices
• How different regions are adapting to the changes brought by IIoT in manufacturing
• Boesl’s vision of the factory of the future in terms of layout and operations
• How smart sensors contribute to real-time data analytics in manufacturing
• The primary challenges manufacturers face when implementing IIoT solutions and how they can be mitigated
• How the role of workers will change in highly automated factories and what skills will be essential

"Dominik’s views on current trends and future visions, rather than specific technical details, are peppered with inspirational thoughts and aspirational goals that Farnell customers will benefit from,” added Obregon. “He is one of those thoughtful and charismatic leaders who have the evidence to support their statements and do so in a way that resonates with truth.”
