The deployment of SCADA data into the cloud and its integration with corporate IT has led to a rising demand for SCADA systems. With additions to the end-user applications such as transportation, oil & gas, and water & wastewater management sectors, the global SCADA market is set to flourish.

The innovative efforts and steps taken by the global leading players such as Schneider Electric, Honeywell International, ABB Ltd., Emerson Electric Co., and Hitachi Ltd. propel the growth of the market.

Automation and Internet of Things (IoT) in every sector have taken the market by storm. The widespread presence of automation and IoT has fuelled the need for SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems. SCADA is an automated tool which can gather, supervise, analyse data and generate reports. Over a span of more than five decades, SCADA systems have come a long way from the basic idea of a supervisory control system to the advanced and complex systems that can supervise as well as acquire data generated on a real time basis. With rigorous efforts put in the research and development of the industry, wireless systems and high-performance microprocessors are now used to provide additional features such as safety and minimal distribution and transmission losses, in the SCADA systems. Wireless SCADA provides instantaneous information on the system performance and helps to take automatic and quick corrective actions.

The oil and gas, water and wastewater, manufacturing, transportation, telecommunication, chemical, and the pharmaceutical industries have a daunting task at hand of managing the large volumes of structured and unstructured data generated at high speeds. For any industry to be successful, one of the key requisites is an efficient data management system that offers reduced interruptions in service and a considerable improvement in the operational costs. Implementation of SCADA systems in these sectors enable the organisations to manage real time data with a higher degree of accuracy and efficiency.

A detailed report published by Allied Market Research states that the global SCADA market is anticipated to garner a remarkable $40,240 million by 2022 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.1 percent during 2016–2022. The year 2015 witnessed notable growth in the Human Machine Interface (HMI) and Programmable Logic Control (PLC) segments which collectively accounted for nearly two-thirds of the share of the global SCADA market. Deployment of SCADA data into the cloud and its integration with corporate IT drive the growth of the global SCADA market.

The global SCADA market is abuzz with the latest growth and developments which include Honeywell’s introduction of real time SCADA systems in the cloud, nine major vulnerabilities in the SCADA software fixed by Advantech, and many more recent advances in the SCADA industry mentioned below.

Schneider Electric launches ClearSCADA 2017 and sets high standards with System Platform 2017

Schneider Electric announced the launch of ClearScada 2017. The latest technology is aimed for the oil & gas industry, power utilities, and water & wastewater management sectors located in geographically dispersed locations. Managing real time data from remote locations is a complicated task. ClearSCADA comes with the additional features of intuitive embedded location-based alarm systems integrated with GPS mapping and weather data.

With the unveiling of System Platform 2017, powered by Wonderware, Schneider Electric has set high standards for operational excellence. The System Platform 2017 is the only platform that is purpose-built and scalable for applications such as SCADA, MES, and the IIoT application development.

In other news, to address the rising concerns regarding the challenges involved in cyber security, Operational Technology (OT) network protection innovator, Claroty, partnered with Schneider Electric. Claroty’s knowledge of SCADA and other OT/IIoT technologies will be a key factor in offering protection to the connected products that are a part of Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure architecture.

Honeywell’s ControlEdge first to get level 2 certification by ISASecure

Honeywell Process Solutions recently announced that its ControlEdge PLC is certified by ISASecure. The PLC has received the first ISASecure Embedded Device Security Assurance (EDSA) Level 2 Certification by Exida. Exida is an ISO 17065 accredited certification body that conducted the assessment. The Level 2 certification is awarded to the systems that can detect unauthorised changes and can maintain the confidentiality of data while at rest or in motion. The certification mainly targets features for embedded devices such as their security and development practices adopted by the suppliers. Considerable reduction in project costs was achieved with the implementation of Honeywell’s Distributed Control System (DCS) PLC. The DCS is integrated with a PLC, RTU, and an HMI Panel, all of which are key components of SCADA, to minimise the cycle downtime.

ABB’s Zenon SCADA

ABB, complex automation and SCADA solution provider, showcased its series of advanced automation technologies at the PPMA Total Show 2017. ABB displayed its wide range of products including robots, distributed control systems (DCS), PLCs, switchgear and much more. One of the key attractions at the show was ABB’s Zenon SCADA. The Zenon system provides an array of features such as security protection, batch, and production scheduling capabilities which are of use to the food & beverages and pharmaceutical industries.
