Multi-protocol Sprint drives can communicate over all popular networks

12 December 2019

Sprint Electric is to launch an Anybus CompactCom option module for its PL/PLX drive range, enabling serial communications using almost any networking protocol.

More and more drives are being controlled and monitored by serial communications networks, as separate production machines are integrated, and manufacturing becomes more automated.

The growing need to monitor and produce traceability of manufactured product in all industries is resulting in more plants requiring real time data. In traditional DC applications such as Wire, Cable, Plastic, Rubber and Steel manufacture to name but a few.

In recent years many drives suppliers have developed their own codes and market both the software and the hardware for these products. As a result, there are many different protocols for networking drives; some of these can be used together in integrated systems, but others cannot.

Sprint has worked with HMS and Anybus for a number of years to make sure as many networks are available as possible for their PL/PLX drive range. Initially working with the Anybus S range of comms options Sprint has gained good experience in digital communications and related systems.

Sprint is now introducing the new Anybus CompactCom option module. This will expand the company’s drive networking capability even further, embracing newer protocols and allowing both prescriptive and predictive feedback from drive to network.

Dr Mark Gardner from Sprint says: “We are using the standard build of the Anybus CompactCom module as this allows the customer the highest level of flexibility and greatest number of options. This method of multiple comms options allows the product to remain future proof and to be used in the latest and most modern IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) and Industry 4.0 systems.”

The PL/PLX DC drive from Sprint Electric uses the latest state of the art digital technology. This microchip-based product is fully programmable to meet the needs of the most demanding DC applications. With eight Analogue inputs, four Analogue outputs, seventeen Digital inputs and seven Digital outputs its level of flexibility is vast. The drive can be operated in AVF, tacho feedback or encoder feedback without any additional option boards. The three-phase supply voltage range is from 12 to 500Vac three phase with options for 600 and 690Volt if needed. It meets all the latest EN standards, is CE marked and UL cUL listed (up to 630Amps, with 2250Amp pending). Simple four pushbutton setup and easy to read two-line text display makes installation and commissioning fast and understandable. Manufactured in the UK with large stocks held at our head office the drive range is available on super-fast delivery.
