Chance to do things differently

20 November 2024

Robots equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) are taking robots to new heights of flexibility. With AI, robots are becoming more capable of learning by experience, opening new possibilities for working in changing environments, or around people.

This is breaking down barriers and helping people realise they can work with robots, in particular collaborative robots, or cobots, which are designed to work right alongside human workers with no barriers.

ABB has recognised this need by building partnerships with educators around the world to provide the equipment and support needed to teach robotics and automation skills. These initiatives allow institutions to develop automated solutions for deployment in real applications, while also enhancing employment opportunities for students.

One of the results of this commitment to education is ABB’s Robotics Education Package. This features a collaborative robot Cell, student-friendly coursework, and, crucially, a globally recognised STEM qualification that enables students, anywhere in the world, to get hands-on experience in robotics.

The package is an easy way for students to discover industrial concepts and skills. ABB has also launched its IRB 1090 education robot, specifically designed to meet the needs of educators and students.

The new AI capabilities of robots are a chance to do things differently, more efficiently and with less effort – however, we must also do education differently, launching courses to ensure we have a well-trained workforce who can use these technologies to their full advantage.
